History Has Made Us What
We Are!
These pictures belong to an excellent collection I have taken
of the splendid and treasured temples of Baalbeck, Lebanon. Baalbeck, or
Heliopolis, or the City of the Sun, used to be one of the greatest cities of the
Roman Empire. The temples are still standing as an evidence of a magnificent
past. Enjoy!
One of my best pictures. This lion head sculpture
once played the role of a gargoyle on the roof's contour of Jupiter Temple
in Baalbeck. It still symbolizes beauty, fertility, and power to me.

The remaining six columns of Jupiter Temple, where the
Sun God of the fertile Bekaa was once worshipped. Compare the giant
65 feet columns with the people near the base of the temple. Now ask
yourself; how did they build such temple 1900 years ago.

This is the temple of Bacchus; the wine God with
Baalbeck city in the background. This is the place were blood
sacrifices and sacred prostitution used to take place. This is by
far the masterpiece of the Roman Architecture.

Heble Stone, the largest stone carved stone in the
world. It is 70 feet in length, 16 by 14 feet in cross
section. It weighs 1500 tons. Intended to be used in the
temples, it is estimated that 40,000 men were required to move it to the
temples that appear in the background. |
